Entrepreneurship as a
career choice?
In our mission to advise, inform and inspire
business owners and managers we offer these ideas for your consideration.
Are you an entrepreneur? Should
you be? Is it
really the right career choice for you?
If you are planning to start your own
business, or if you are questioning whether you
should be running a business, here are some
ideas to consider.
Do
you really want to
own your own business? The advantages are attractive, but
don’t forget the disadvantages that
are an inevitable part of that choice.
The Advantages
-
Unlimited
opportunity and freedom to pursue your dreams
-
Continuous challenge
and variety of experiences
-
Your
own choice of
management style and corporate culture
-
Responsible for
and involved in the whole business
-
If the business
does well, you do well
The Disadvantages
-
There are still limits to what you can do or
can control
-
Many
more people are
now dependent on you to deliver
-
Requires skills
and knowledge you probably do not have
-
Higher risk
of failure,
less secure financial future
-
Cannot leave
your job
at the office
Business ownership still may be attractive to
you, but does it fit your personality? The common characteristics of
successful entrepreneurs generally include: Independent, confident, persistent, action-oriented, risk taker,
passionate, persuasive, leader,
achiever.
If that describes you, then what about your
personal expectations and preferences for lifestyle, work
environment, compensation and rewards. The comfort and support
systems of the corporate environment will not likely be available to
the entrepreneur; certainly not at the start-up phase.
Do you have the education, training,
experience and contact network
that will support your business plan? These elements will affect
your choices among the entrepreneurial options available to you:
Having made a choice do you have a solid
business plan that responds to a clearly defined market opportunity? Are you
operating according to the plan and achieving the expected results?
These questions and approaches should help you to
decide if entrepreneurship
is the right career choice for you and to
develop a plan for success.
Good luck! That also helps.
